WHY DO I GET MORE DUPLICATES ON COPY/MOVE THAN ON TEST

This is because it is impossible to discover all duplicates on a test run. If the same photo exists in the destination folder and source folder, all modes (test, copy, move) will discover the duplicates. But if you have multiple duplicates in the source folder, but no match in the destination folder this will not show on a test run. So all duplicates can't be discovered before you do the real thing. So this is why you may experience more duplicates on a copy/move than it showed in the test. No need for panic:)

WHAT HAPPENS IF I PRESS STOP AFTER STARTING A COPY/MOVE

When pressing stop it will simply abort the process. All photos that has been handled so far will remain handled, and the rest of the photos will remain unhandled.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A DUPLICATE SITUATION

If the destination folder already contains a file with the same file name, the program will check if it really is the same. It checks the binary content of the file, so it is able to check with 100% probability if they are the same. If it is NOT the same it will move/copy the file with a counter extension.
Example:

  1. c:\myphotos\img123.JPG is set to be moved to c:\allphotos\ with the new file name 2008-03-01_15-25-30_Apple-iPhone.JPG
  2. c:\allphotos\2008-03-01_15-25-30_Apple-iPhone.JPG already exist
  3. The program checks if c:\myphotos\img123.JPG and c:\allphotos\2008-03-01_15-25-30_Apple-iPhone.JPG are equal
  4. If they are equal it will just do a copy/move overwrite
  5. If they are not equal it will copy/move c:\myphotos\img123.JPG c:\allphotos\2008-03-01_15-25-30_Apple-iPhone_1.JPG.
Notice the "_1" extension. If c:\allphotos\2008-03-01_15-25-30_Apple-iPhone_1.JPG also exists it will copy with "_2" extension, and so on.
If any of the existing extension files are equal it will do a copy/move overwrite.
This results in a collection of files with no duplicates, and files with same date and camera type which is not equal will be saved with extensions.

PHOTOS WITH ERROR

All errors when handling a photo file will make the program skip handling of this file. In the main window you can see how many photo files which has an error. There can be several reasons for a error on a photo file, and if you look in the "Extended log" pane you will find the reasons after the file name(s). One reason could be that the image is damaged. Another reason could be that the "image is in use by another process". For instance the image is being viewed in another program. Close the other program using this or simply restart the machine. A nice tip is to run the program with no other programs running.

PHOTOS DUPLICATED

In the main window it will show you how many photo files that was duplicates. If you wish to see which photo files that already existed in the destination folder, have a look at the "Photos duplicated" in the "Extended logs" pane. No need to look very closely at this, but it's there if you want to know the details.

PHOTOS EXCLUDED

In the main window it will show you how many photo files that's excluded. Normally there are no photos excluded, unless you have chosen to exclude photo files from specific cameras in the camera specific settings. If you wish to see which photo files that was excluded, have a look in the "Photos excluded" window in the "Extended logs" pane.

PHOTOS WITHOUT DATE

This program is based on EXIF data in the photo files. This says what date and time the photo was taken. It also has the name of the camera manufacturer and camera model. This information is what this program is using to generate the file names. All cameras is set to include this information in the photo files. If any of these are missing from the photo file, the photo file will not be copied/moved, unless you check the "Use file date when the photo has no EXIF info". Typically, photos without this information are not the orginal raw photo from a camera. The picture may have been resized or otherwise altered and then the photo EXIF information may disappear. In the main window it will show you how many photo files that is missing this information. If you wish to see which photo files that is missing this information, have a look at the "Photos without date" in the "Extended logs" pane.
